Greg's Browser 2.0.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:G:Greg's Browser 2.0.sit 2.0 0 63K 2/28/94 Greg's Browser 2.0 - Greg's Browser is an interesting "finder replacement" stand alone application. When you open it, you are presented with a scrolling list of all folders and applications (like if you could view your desktop by name). Click on the hard drive's name, and in the next column over appears all the folders and applications on the hard drive (like in view by name). You can launch programs, open folders to show a list view in the next column to the right, throw things away, and put icons in a special place for quick access. You can also have invisible files show. Plus, most of the functions can be run through the keyboard! Requires System 7. There are too many changes from 1.x to list. Just try it.
Monitor Expander 1.0.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:M:Monitor Expander 1.0.1.sit 1.0.1 0 39K 2/28/94 Monitor Expander 1.0.1 - Monitor Expander is a $25 shareware control panel that allows you to enlarge your desktop area. You can choose to enlarge your desktop by “eating away” at the borders that surround the usable portion of your monitor, thereby increasing the area of the desktop that you can view at one time, or by allowing you to scroll around a virtual desktop that is bigger than the usable portion of your monitor, or both. You can choose from a variety of viewing areas and virtual desktop sizes ranging from the conventional 640x480 to a staggering 1952x2048, which is more than a thirteen-fold increase in desktop area. Requires System 7.
FolderIconCleaner1.1.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:F:FolderIconCleaner1.1.1.sit 1.1.1 0 25K 2/28/94 FolderIconCleaner1.1.1 - Folder Icon Cleaner is a small utility that lets you correctly get rid of those space and time wasting custom icons, stuck right there on your folders. Let me explain why I say “correctly”. The Finder keeps every folder icon in a separate hidden file. The known versions of the Finder (7.0, 7.0.1, 7.1) do not delete this file when removing a custom folder icon. They only delete the icon resources from the file. Note that no other information is kept into these “Icon” files. Folder Icon Cleaner correctly removes the icon by deleting the file (and by updating the “Use custom icon” attribute of the folder). No data is lost, you only gain a little more free space on your disk. 1.1.1 fixed bug!
DefaultApp1.0a1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:DefaultApp1.0a1.sit 1.0a1 0 11K 2/28/94 Default App 1.0a1 - Default Application is a utility for configuring Finder 7’s choice of the application to launch for documents whose creators can’t be found. For example, I have my Finder configured so that if I double-click a MacWrite II or Microsoft Word document, it is automatically opened with MacWrite Pro. There are other utilities around for doing this, but what makes mine different is that it’s a control panel, and lets you make changes quickly, without quitting and restarting the Finder. Default App does not need to load (as a control panel) on startup, so it can reside anywhere on the drive. Balloon help is available.

The name and number appear beneath the extension's icon, and since the name is usually truncated, Symbionts also displays it in the menu bar. Symbionts even shows the icons for those extensions that don't normally reveal themselves. Symbionts Control is a control panel that sets the preferences for the Symbionts extension. It also allows the review of the information collected by the Symbionts extension. Additionally, the control panel is used to manage the loading of system extensions without having to dig around. SpeedyFinder7 v1.5.9b.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:S:SpeedyFinder7 v1.5.9b.sit 1.5.9b 0 159K 2/28/94 SpeedyFinder7 v1.5.9b - SpeedyFinder7 is a system software enhancement control panel for the Macintosh Operating System. It can speed up copying, remove the delay when renaming files, empty the Trash fast, automatically resolve Aliases for Get Info, opening documents of one application with a different application, and much more. See the docs for more details. New users, please take the time to read that document. SpeedyFinder requires at least System 7.0 and will function under System 7.0.1, System 7.1 and now with version 1.5.9 System 7 Pro. Quiet Start 1.2.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Powerbook:Quiet Start 1.2.sit 1.2 0 7K 2/28/94 Quiet Start 1.2 - Quiet Start is a system extension which will keep some Macintosh models from making the usual chime at startup or restart. I made it particularly for those PowerBook users who may really want to use thier computer as a laptop and may find themselves in an environment where the chime would be disturbing to others (like in a classroom). Please be aware that because your Macintosh may not have a ROM which checks the volume level before making the chime, this program may have no effect on your computer. Sorry, there's nothing a program can do until it's running - and bootstrap ROM always goes first. Volume 1.1 Fixed a bug which would often keep the volume at 0 after startup.
Peeping Tom 1.4.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:P-Q:Peeping Tom 1.4.sit 1.4 0 13K 2/28/94 Peeping Tom 1.4 - Peeping Tom is a shareware init/background application that keeps track of the current applications and desk accessories that are open. When processes are quit, Peeping Tom writes the information that it has on the dead process to a text file in the System Folder. The log file shows information on when each process was started and the total time it ran. Peeping Tom also shows the average CPU usage of the process. The percentage represents how much the process used of the CPU while the process was running. Peeping Tom is very useful for monitoring computers. It keeps track of time spent on the computer, which is perfect for those who bill their customers on a hourly basis.
Dialog View 1.0.8.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:Dialog View 1.0.8.sit 1.0.8 0 22K 2/28/94 Dialog View 1.0.8 - Dialog View (formerly List Font) is a control panel that allows you to change the font and size used in directory dialog file lists, and display the real icons of files in such lists. It requires System 7. If you use it together with the author's Open-wide program, you will be able to use larger fonts without cramping the list. Dialog View uses undocumented system information. It has been tested with System 7.0.1 and System 7.1, but it could break in the future. Displaying the real icons requires querying the desktop database, which may cause noticeable delay and disk activity. This will be especially noticeable with slow disks such as CD-ROMs. Now compatible with Macintosh Easy Open and the Lang. Kit extn.
ColorKey 4.0.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:C:ColorKey 4.0.1.sit 4.0.1 0 18K 2/28/94 ColorKey 4.0.1 - ColorKey is a combination of a system extension and a control panel that, when you hold down Command (that’s the apple key) and option while you click the mouse, will cycle through the screen depths you select (black and white, 4 color, 16 colors, 256 colors, etc.). The first time you run ColorKey, you will see a configuration dialog appear on the screen. This allows you to immediately jump to any color depth and to select the depths you’d like to cycle through. If you would like to see this dialog EVERY TIME you activate ColorKey, check the “Always Show this Dialog” button at the bottom of the dialog. A handy device for game players! Requires a color Mac, and System 7.

Searching on just about any conceivable combination of Macintosh file attribute, UltraFind is designed to go and get the exact document you need from among countless documents with similar file names or types, or collect files from all over your system and move them to new locations. You can even search for specific words, or parts of sentences anywhere within files on any mounted media (CD's, tapes, hard drives...).
SAVe the Disk 1.31.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:S:SAVe the Disk 1.31.sit 1.31 0 13K 2/09/94 SAVe the Disk 1.31 - sAVe the Disk is a system extension which will alleviate the excessive disk drive hits experienced by owners of AV Macs in the following two circumstances - 1) The traps ChangedResource and AddResource flush the whole file to disk each time they are invoked. This significantly degrades performance if many resources are changed in succession, e.g. while linking programs or running resource compilers. 2) Each time a sound channel is allocated (disposed) some information is read from (written to) the file DSP Preferences. Applications which follow Apple's recommendations create and destroy such a channel for each single sound they produce and thus slow down while they torture your hard disk.
Quit It 1.21.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:P-Q:Quit It 1.21.sit 1.21 0 28K 2/09/94 Quit It 1.21 - A Macintosh is very easy to use, but neverteless there are users who don't understand anything about processes etc. All they see is windows on the screen, and to stop working they just close the window using the close box. But this leaves the application open, which can lead to confusion on one side, and on a shortage of memory on the other side. Quit It can take away this problem - whenever the last window of an application is closed using the close box, it will quit the application. That's all there is to it. There are some user configurations - you can set programs to not quit with the last window closed and more. This is a great init to use when kids are on the computer! This control panel requires System 7.
OtherMenu 1.3.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:N-O:OtherMenu 1.3.sit 1.3 0 149K 2/09/94 OtherMenu 1.3 - OtherMenu is an extension that creates a system-wide hierarchical menu somewhat similar to the Apple menu. It can be used for launching applications and documents, restart and shut down, various file management functions, and executing FKEYs. OtherMenu takes up a minimum of about 14K of system memory, but uses more depending on the length of the menu and the number of submenus. The contents of OtherMenu’s menu is determined by the contents of the OtherMenu Folder. All files and aliases placed in the OtherMenu Folder become OtherMenu menu items. And you can put in folders, and aliases of folders and volumes, to create submenus up to 5 levels deep. Requires System 7.

But what, after somebody else mounted your hard disk he immediately moves your icons from their original place to somewhere else and destroys your in-years-build desktop!! Ilka does a quite simple but effective job - it hides all files on the desktop, you can dock/mount the volume and after work is done you'll tell Ilka to show the files again. No cluttered desktop, no wasting hours with redragging your icons again! Also included in this pack is Suzi, a simple security application. Susi hides any file or folder with a given label. You apply labels to files and folders within the Finder.

Finder Liaison acts as an intermediary between AppleScript and the Finder. AppleEvents supported by Finder Liaison - Show About This Mac, Empty Trash, Restart, Show Clipboard Shut Down, Sleep, Close Window of (Folder or Disk), Print Window of (Folder or Disk), Page Setup for (Folder or Disk), Open (File or Folder or Disk), Duplicate, Get Info, Make Alias of, Print, Put Away, Reveal, Set View of, Move window of, set window size of, plus much more!!

Drop keys are user-configurable. File Buddy 2.05 provides four main areas of functionality - Get Info, file finding, file manipulation (moving, copying, and deleting), and disk cleaning. All are discussed in the documentation. File Buddy now has the ability to search disks for files and folders matching criteria you specifyin the File Buddy Find window. How much battery life you really gain by dimming the screen? How much extra power the modem uses? This program will help you answer those questions. The heart of this program is the extended Power Manager, currently only found in the Powerbook Duo computers. Besides monitoring battery voltage, the extended Power Manager monitors actual power consumption and a wealth of other data. Most of the items in the Detailed Power Information window are self explanitory. Check out the read me docs for more help.
Disk Charmer 2.1.2.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:Disk Charmer 2.1.2.sit 2.1.2 0 45K 2/09/94 Disk Charmer 2.1.2 - Disk Charmer is a small utility for erasing stacks of floppy disks. It sports background formatting, but only when the new Thread Manager is present. You should notice that Disk Charmer allows switching among applications while operating. This happens because I use "asynchronous" reads and writes from/to the disks. Macs with I/O chips (IIfx, Quadra 800, 900, 950, and probably the Workgroup Servers) do not slow down while reading the entire disk. This version of Disk Charmer was written because the author wanted a drag & drop eraser with every possible option and a nice, easy to use interface. Requires System 7. System 6 users can use the one in the Utilities section. 2.1.2 contains bug fixes.
Check 32! 1.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:C:Check 32! 1.1.sit 1.1 0 47K 2/09/94 Check 32! 1.1 - If you have more than 8 megabytes of RAM installed in your Mac, chances are you are using 32-bit addressing. Why?? Because if you're not using 32-bit addressing your Mac won't recognize more than 8 megs of RAM. What you might not know, is that some of your applications may not be “32-bit clean”. What does this mean?? If an application is not 32-bit clean, you may be experiencing strange System Errors, crashes, irritability, sleepless nights, etc. That's where “Check 32!” steps in. “Check 32!” looks at your applications to see if they are, indeed, 32-bit compatible. So, check out your drives, floppies or programs, and turn 32 bit addressing on! Requires System 7.

You can then perform individual application launching, document lauching, or entire group launching. Documents may also be either opened or printed. A/S goes a lot further than simple launching. You can attach notes to any group, application, or document entry. You can launch applications with selected documents, all documents, or no documents. You can also choose any application or document and A/S will use AppleEvents to locate the files in the Finder, or ask the Finder to get information on a file. Requires System 7.

Very helpful when the application which created a document isn't available (referred to as an "orphaned" file.). For example, normally TeachText is used as the "substitute" application for orphaned 'TEXT' and 'PICT' documents, but with AppChooser, you can choose any substitution application, such as your favorite paint program for all PICT files. And you can define more! Extremely easy to use, no restart is necessary, and your changes take effect immediately. System 7 is required.

While it is more useful if you are using an external battery like a Technöggin PowerPlate or the VST ThinPack, it also works great with internal batteries. Threshold allows you to manually control the threshold voltages for these warning messages, so that they come up when you want them to. Threshold requires System 7.0 or later. Threshold has been tested on most current flavors of PowerBooks. It will not work on a Duo.

QuickEncrypt 1.0.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:P-Q:QuickEncrypt 1.0.sit 1.0 0 15K 2/01/94 QuickEncrypt 1.0 - This application will quickly and fairly securely encrypt or decrypt any document you drop on it. It will handle files of an unlimited length, and will use as much memory as you care to give it — i.e. allocating more memory will speed it up (slightly). To use QuickEncrypt, either drop any number of files onto the application, or start it as usual by double-clicking on application. For each file, if it isn’t encrypted, you will be prompted for a password to encrypt the data, which will be confirmed to ensure you didn’t mis-key it, since there is no way to unencyrpt a file if you forget the password. If the file is encrypted, you will be asked for it’s password and have four guesses. Requires System 7.

PowerBook Tester 1.0.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Powerbook:PowerBook Tester 1.0.sit 1.0 0 10K 2/01/94 PowerBook Tester 1.0 - PowerBook Screen Tester is a utility made so people with Active-Matrix displays can test for screen flaws on their PowerBook (170, 180 or 180c, and Duos). Instead of changing the Desktop pattern like Macworld (August 1993, pg. 91, Test Your Display Flaws) suggested, this will make the entire screen the color you want it to be. The color choices are - black, white, green, blue, and red. When you select a color and choose test, the entire screen changes, and you can look for stuck pixels. This is a good program to run on a Powerbook before you buy it. Afterwords, it might only make you sad. Luckily, I only have one pixel stuck! Make sure there's no lint on the screen, I thought I had lots of stuck pixels!!
OSA Menu 1.0.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:N-O:OSA Menu 1.0.sit 1.0 0 17K 2/01/94 OSA Menu 1.0 - The OSA Menu is an iconic system menu (like the Help menu) that appears on the right side of the menu bar. Its menu items are scripts - choose an item from the menu and the script will run. Some commands are always available, and some are only available within particular applications. Generally the target of the script is the active application, and scripts that operate on the user selection are particularly useful. Scripts in the OSA Menu act like extensions to the command set of the application. The main advantage to scripts in the menu is that you can call them up with one mouse click without leaving your current context for the Finder. Requires Sys 7 and AppleScript, Userland Frontier, QuicKeys 3, etc.
Omega SANE patcher 1.3.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:N-O:Omega SANE patcher 1.3.sit 1.3 0 55K 2/01/94 Omega SANE patcher 1.3 - According to Apple - Omega SANE works only with a Ci-class ROM or better (and the more recent Macs have it in their ROMS already). So older Macs (like the Mac II) won't show any improvement after this patch is applied, and newer models don't need it. This patch makes your math processor faster. Apple released the Omega SANE routines to improve floating point math. These routines are faster and more accurate than the originals. This application will patch the Omega SANE routines into your System 7.0 or 7.1 System file. You should also be able to patch a copy of System 6.0.7/8 (while running under 7, though). New - The ROM patch overrides are even more reliable now. Read docs before using.

Keep It Up 1.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:J-K:Keep It Up 1.1.sit 1.1 0 102K 2/01/94 Keep It Up 1.1 - Are you tired of getting the "The Application xxx has unexpectedly quit because an error of type zz occurred" message? Are you depending on this application to keep running at all times, even when you're away? Then you should investigate "Keep It Up" (KIU), the new utility by the author of Autoboot. KIU watches certain applications and monitors if they are still running. If an application no longer runs because it "unexpectedly quit" or because the user quit it, KIU will attempt to relaunch this application or restart the computer. This will ensure that your application is always running and available. This is especially important for all kinds of server applications. System 7 only.

To do this, simply create a new folder next to the existing one with the same name with “.alt” on the end. When AltFromMain Folders is executed at startup, it will rename the folders with “.alt” on the end as the main folder, and add the suffix “.main” to the original folder, resulting in the alternative folder taking over from the original one. AltToMain Folders does the reverse, restoring the setup to the original state. Requires System 7.

The algorithm I use is quite fast, but keep in mind that FaberZooms does not run as fast as it could. The Mac host might have useful calculations to do, so I gently "relinquish the processor". Version 1.1.1 is updated for use with DarkSide 4.1, and emits a sound while the rectangle moves.

Great when it comes to changing the colors of those beveled edges and highlighted zoom box. There is a revert button, if what you create just doesn't look right. This updated version of Color7 fixes a bug in the button drawing, so that it doesn't constantly redraw while under 24-bit mode. It also keeps the colors from changing incorrectly after choosing a color.
WrapScreen1.3.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:U-Z:WrapScreen1.3.sit 1.3 0 9K 11/10/93 WrapScreen1.3 - This control panel lets your screen wrap onto itself - your mouse can exit through the right edge and reenter on the left. You can choose to wrap horizontally, vertically or both by checking the appropriate boxes in the control panel. Changes take effect as soon as you close the control panel, and are remembered for the next restarts. You can also choose not to wrap vertically on the main monitor (useful to catch the menus), and not to wrap in the corners of the main monitor (useful also for the menus, and for screen savers). This version is fully compatible with multiple screen systems. The mouse will wrap correctly one monitor to the next, just don't lose that pointer!!
SpokesDaemon&Spiricom.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:S:SpokesDaemon&Spiricom.sit 0 287K 11/10/93 SpokesDaemon&Spiricom - SpokesDaemon and Spiricom are two separate programs which together utilize some of Apple's latest technology to enhance your computing experience. SpokesDaemon is a 'faceless background application' (similar to a 'daemon' on a UNIX computer) which accepts and processes requests from other applications for text-to-speech services. Spiricom is the program that you can use to communicate with, configure, and test SpokesDaemon. Spiricom is necessary because SpokesDaemon is a 'faceless' application; in other words, SpokesDaemon has no menus, no windows, and no buttons. Requires System 7 and Speech Manager 1.0 or higher.

You can choose every hour, half-hour, or quarter-hour as you prefer, and when you startup the time, you will be told "about" what time it is. You can also choose to have the day told to you (I recommend just being told once a day!), and can choose between a male or male voice. This file contains the female voice only. The Invisible Clock Sounds file contains digitized voice in 'snd ' resources. Using a sound editing program such as SoundEdit Pro, you can record your own voice for announcing the time. Just replace any 'snd ' resource with another of the same name.

The "PowerBook" or "Portable" Control Panel provided by Apple only allows you to enter a single wakeup time. This prevents you from scheduling multiple wake-up sessions. For example, if you wanted to send your faxes at 1:00am, and then download some files at 2:00am, you'd have to stay up until 1:00am, and reset the wakeup timer manually. Insomniac is a very convenient program for automatically sending faxes or email in the middle of the night. Insomniac allows you to program up to fifty wakeup events (only two until you register it for $10).
DarkShutdown 2.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:DarkShutdown 2.1.sit 2.1 0 8K 11/10/93 DarkShutdown 2.1 - DarkShutdown is a DarkSide of the Mac module. DarkSide is a free, yet wonderful and non-obtrusive screen-saver by Tom Dowdy. This screen saver will not patch the Operating System, avoiding the dreaded conflicts you may experience with other screen savers. DarkShutdown works by sending a restart or shutdown Apple Event to the Finder (or At Ease); the net effect is the same as if you had chosen "Restart" or "Shut Down" in the Finder. The Finder will politely close all your open applications, then restart or power off your Mac if software-power off capable. DarkShutdown may be used on any Mac with DarkSide 4.1, which requires System 7 or later.

Have you ever wanted to open/save a document into a place where the Finder already has a window opened for it? If you see the window in the Finder you can instantly make that your current folder simply by clicking on it. If you want to select the desktop, simply click on the desktop. If the open/save dialog should happen to obscure the Finder window you are looking for, then simply drag it out of the way by dragging it from any point along the frame! Requires System 7. (The sound resource has been deleted, contact the author if you wish to obtain it).

To use it, simply select the files you want to join, and drag & drop them onto ChunkJoiner. You will be asked the “type” and “creator” for the newly created file. You will be also asked for the name of the application which can open the resulting file; I have added this because the Finder 7.x can read this name and show it to the user if the application is not present. ChunkJoiner operates on data forks, because by joining resource forks you would obtain a corrupted resource file. ChunkJoiner can only be used under System 7 or later.

AppMenu Additions 1.01.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:AppleScript:AppMenu Additions 1.01.sit 1.01 0 6K 11/10/93 AppMenu Additions 1.01 - The file “Application Menu” contains some useful AppleScript commands that let you invoke the functions of the top three items in the System 7 application menu from a script. “Hide front application” hides the frontmost application (and brings another application to the front); “Hide other applications” hides all but the frontmost application; and “Show all applications” makes all application windows visible again. To use this addition, put it in your Scripting Additions folder (inside your Extensions folder in the System Folder). You must have AppleScript, a commercial program from Apple, to use this file.

The bar may be arranged either horizontally or vertically, and may be drawn in any color. The program can use either full size (Finder icon size) or half size (Application menu size) icons. This is a nice program for people who are constantly switching between applications, and spend alot of time moving the mouse to the upper right corner to do so. This version has fixes and enhancements. Balloon help is now supported.

RAM DiskHelper creates a folder named "RAM Disk Image" in your system folder. Move files, folders, and/or aliases into this folder. Open your Memory control panel and create a RAM Disk. Reboot again. At startup, RAM Disk Helper will create a directory structure on the RAM Disk matching the one in the RAM Disk Image folder. It resolves any file aliases and copies the files onto the RAM Disk. As you work, RAM Disk Helper will periodically scan the RAM Disk for any modified or newly created files and will copy them back to the appropriate directories on your hard disk. Requires System 7 and at least an 020.

Invisotime is not an init so if you want to use it ALONE (without invisonit) you should put a copy in your startup folder and/or use a utility like Quickeys for automation. invisonit - invisonit is an init that will update invisotime's files at bootup and on the hour. You do not have to use it, but it sure beats running invisotime every hour manually (assuming you do not have Quickeys or an equivalent program).

It has intentionally few features. It displays the hour and minute, respecting the time format you have set in your control panels. It doesn’t display seconds or the date or ring chimes or display movies or pictures or animations. Just the time. The motivation for creating attoClock was that the author likes having a clock on his screen, but he doesn't want to give up a lot of memory or disk space for the function, or install extensions or control panels for a clock.

As an efficient alternative to the standard QWERTY layout, Dvorak may be just the thing you need if you are currently fighting repetive stress injury (RSI) problems. Strictly based on the standard U.S. layout (default for System 7), I proceeded to create two layouts for Dvorak. Both layouts differ slightly from the ANSI Dvorak. You can change keyboard layouts at any time with the Keyboard control panel or by pressing command-option-space. Use Key Caps to see where all of the keys are located. After years of QWERTY, it doesn't come easily. You can move the keys around on some keyboards if you want them to read correctly.

At this time, AppletalkOn will examine the current state of Appletalk and turn it on. It will also save the state of AppleTalk and optionally restore that state when you boot up next time. The reason this extension is necessary is that, starting with System 7 TuneUp, AppleTalk does not load into memory if it is off at startup time. This requires you to turn AppleTalk on and then restart. This is annoying at best, and thus was born AppleTalkOn. AppleTalkOn currently occupies 20K or RAM while it runs.
AliasZoo 2.0.2.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:A:AliasZoo 2.0.2.sit 2.0.2 0 138K 9/10/93 AliasZoo 2.0.2 - AliasZoo is the quickest and easiest way to get control over the mountain of Alias files living on your Hard Drive. This version of AliasZoo has been COMPLETELY re-written, and includes many new features and ideas that were requested by people like yourself (who knows, maybe you'll even see some of your own suggestions in this version). I hope you like the result. Some of the changes include - Added a RESOLVE button. Now you can FIND aliases seperately from actually resolving them. The AliasZoo window is now fully re-sizeable. When Resolving aliases, AliasZoo will not unmount volumes until it absolutely has to. You can tell AliasZoo to not mount removable volumes when resolving things. Plus lots more changes!
SpeechAddition.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 Tools:AppleScript:SpeechAddition.sit 0 6K 9/01/93 SpeechAddition - The following is a scripting addition for AppleScript allowing basic use of the new speech manager. Requires AppleScript and the Speech Manager. When running this script, each installed voice will state his/her name and more. A good way to hear all of Apple's voices for Speech Manager 3.0. To use this script, place Speech in the Scripting Additions folder in the extensions folder. After restarting, open Try all Voices to hear each Mac voice. (You may need to increase the memory allocation using Get Info).
Plug Alert 1.0.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Powerbook:Plug Alert 1.0.1.sit 1.0.1 0 5K 9/01/93 Plug Alert 1.0.1 - This is a simple INIT to help with the annoying problem of a PowerBook being unplugged by accident. When you unplug the PowerBook, Plug Alert will put up a message telling you that the charger has been taken out of the PowerBook. Also if the wall current is off, or the charger is unplugged from the wall, Plug Alert will notify you of this as well. This INIT is not likely to have any sort of conflict, it is VERY simple. This version fixed the message that told the user when the PowerBook was unplugged, so it read correctly. Also added the feature which notifies the user when the wall current is off, or when the charger has been unplugged from the wall.
DropInfo 2.0.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:DropInfo 2.0.sit 2.0 0 14K 9/01/93 DropInfo 2.0 - Drop any file, folder, or disk onto this application's icon. It will proceed to display many file attributes, which you can then edit. The file attributes displayed are - type, creator, file locked, name locked, Inited, has bundle, Invisible, Shared, Use custom icon, Alias, Stationary, No Inits. Very helpful when you need to change attributes.
DarkSide of the Mac 4.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:DarkSide of the Mac 4.1.sit 4.1 0 412K 9/01/93 DarkSide of the Mac 4.1 - DarkSide is a freeware extendable screen saver with 41 different faders. It runs as an application and does not patch any traps. It is important to note that DarkSide 4.1 requires System 7 to run and is 32 bit clean. Documentation is included. DarkSide 4.0 is a fairly complete rewrite from the 3.x code path. It is a superset of the functionality offered under 3.x. This version of DarkSide can run most AfterDark modules. For legal and technical reasons, DarkSide is unable to run the "Star Trek" modules. An excellent shareware screen saver.
Alias Dragon 1.0b2.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:A:Alias Dragon 1.0b2.sit 1.0b2 0 7K 9/01/93 Alias Dragon 1.0b2 - When you rebuild your desktop, an alias to an application on a different volume loses its ability to support drag-and-drop. Alias Dragon fixes this by copying desktop information from the target volume to the volume containing the alias. So far as I know, none of the other alias management utilities do this. Freeware. Requires System 7.
Felix 1.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:F:Felix 1.1.sit 1.1 0 11K 8/26/93 Felix 1.1 - Felix is a control panel that allows you, when double-clicking on a document, to choose which application you want to use to open it. All you have to do is to maintain the Control key down while double-clicking. You will then be presented with a Standard File dialog prompting you for an application. The application you choose will then be launched and asked to open the document. If you choose "Cancel" in this dialog, the default (i.e. usual) application will be used. Felix requires System 7. To install it, just drop it into your Control Panel folder and restart. Felix is very small (about 12 kilobytes on disk and less than 512 bytes of RAM) so its size shouldn't bother you too much.
RevertDICT.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Frontier:RevertDICT.sit 0 11K 8/20/93 RevertDICT - This program is a droplet. This is a file for System 7 users who are using Frontier or Frontier Runtime. As I do not have Frontier installed, I have no idea what this file does!
DepthMaster1.O.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:DepthMaster1.O.sit 1.0 0 26K 8/20/93 DepthMaster1.O - DepthMaster is a great control panel for people who use programs which always seem to want a different color depth (please set monitor to 8 bit...). I get tired of always having to open the monitor control panel to change the setting. DepthMaster can do it for you. It lets you set the monitor depth and sound level for each application you want. Then DepthMaster will do it's work when you launch one of the applications. A hot menu can be set up to access DepthMaster. A must for game players! Requires System 7.
Applicon 2.3.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:A:Applicon 2.3.sit 2.3 0 70K 8/20/93 Applicon 2.3 - Applicon displays a tile (a small square window) for each application you have open. Each tile displays an application's icon and name. If you click a tile, the corresponding application will come to the front. Option-clicking hides the previous application as the new application comes forward. If Applicon's tiles are all hidden behind other windows, moving the mouse to a "hot spot" in a corner of the screen will bring them forward. Applicon itself is just an application. It's not an INIT or system extension, not a DA, nor a control panel. It is very reliable and highly compatible with the rest of your software. Requires System 7.
AppDisk 1.6.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:A:AppDisk 1.6.1.sit 1.6.1 0 26K 8/20/93 AppDisk 1.6.1 - AppDisk is a ramdisk. What is a ramdisk? Its a piece of software that lets you use some extra RAM memory as a really fast hard disk. The disk will appear on your desktop just like any other hard disk, and you can copy files to it just like normal. The only difference between a ramdisk and a normal disk is that when you turn the power off to your Mac, or restart, the contents of the ramdisk are lost. This is one reason AppDisk has several options to automatically save a copy of the ramdisk contents onto your hard disk. The difference between AppDisk and most other ramdisk programs is that the AppDisk gets the memory for its disk from its application memory. Requires System 7.
TimeTeller 1.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:T:TimeTeller 1.1.sit 1.1 0 66K 8/11/93 TimeTeller 1.1 - TimeTeller makes your Mac speak the time using a digitized voice. The spoken times are determined by a schedule that you can change using ResEdit, as described in the documentation. TimeTeller requires System 7, and works only on a Mac II or later machine. TimeTeller uses only 48K of application memory while running. Its "disk footprint" is less than 64K. Since TimeTeller is a background application, it does not trap any patches and can't cause compatibility problems. Version 1.1 is compatible with Apple's Sound Manager 3.0. If you aren't using Sound Manager 3.0, I suggest that you continue to use version 1.0 of TimeTeller, which requires only 32K of application memory.
Ppat Viewer 1.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:P-Q:Ppat Viewer 1.1.sit 1.1 0 30K 8/11/93 Ppat Viewer 1.1 - The ppat Viewer will open any file and list any ppat resources that exist in the resource portion of the file. Selecting a ppat from the list will display the ppat, up to 256x256 pixels in size. No more need to use ResEdit to view a ppat (which won't show the large ones anyway). Includes a special feature for programmers who need to hard code a ppat into their program. New to v1.1 - some cosmetic changes and the ability to delete a ppat from the opened file. Also, you can now drop any file on the ppat Viewer icon to open it.

It can be set up to delete all or all unresolvable aliases, empty directories, and empty files. It can also automatically fix files that have accidentally had their alias bits set (and thus are really not aliases after all). As always, you select what Pesticide actually does. Desktop Deleter allows you to select and delete different types of desktop database files from your hard drive. It also allows you to delete old-style and foreign disk database files. Since System 7 does not use the old-style Desktop files, you can free a large amount of space from your disks by deleting it. Desktop deleter can also be used to recover files lost due to the System 7 tuneup bug. Desktop deleter may not fix file disappearance problems, but will make the problems fixable with a disk repair utility. This utility is one of the 7 Plus utilities by Robert Gibson. Smooth Updates 0.9.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:S:Smooth Updates 0.9.sit 0.9 0 38K 7/15/93 Smooth Updates 0.9 - This is a control panel / system extension that makes window updating happen all at once instead of as the application draws items. It fools you into thinking everything runs faster. To use it, just drop it into your System Folder (System 7 or later required). This was written quickly and submitted to the hack contest at MacHack '93, and as such it has not been very well tested. It does not affect drawing to the Desktop or to plain GrafPorts (black and white windows). The control panel setting is not saved between reboots. Think C source is included (you will need to use the control panel file itself for the non-code resources).

It now also leaves behind some bogus folders on your desktop so that your Mac doesn't look suspiciously empty. Requires System 7.

About 1.0.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:A:About 1.0.sit 1.0 0 57K 7/01/93 About 1.0 - About is a process monitor. Its appearance is an unabashed knockoff of the Finder’s display; but unlike that display, you can actually use About to interact with your processes and get information on them. A little arrow appears next to the current process. Clicking an icon switches you to its process, and option–clicking an icon hides or shows that process, just like the Hide and Show commands in the application menu. You can customize the display in many ways — use large icons if you prefer, or arrange the processes by their location in memory to reveal the “holes” in your address space. About can maintain a log of application activity and much more! Look for Mountain 1.0 to use with this application.

Fonts Folder Tuner 1.0.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:F:Fonts Folder Tuner 1.0.sit 1.0 0 8K 6/22/93 Fonts Folder Tuner 1.0 - A few months ago after installing System 7.1, I noticed that my Mac seemed to have a lot less memory available to applications than it used to. Being a programmer nerd and all I decided to look into it and discovered this - there's a bug with System 7.1's Fonts folder. The result of the bug is that every font on your Mac is loaded and locked down forever and ever, taking up lots of memory that is supposed to be reused by applications. Fonts Folder Tuner changes the buggy byte to what it should be. It doesn't install extensions or mess with any other files besides the System file. You only need to run Fonts Folder Tuner once. Requires System 7.1

If you run FinderToFront three minutes after startup time, it puts up a simple about dialog. Click on this dialog when you have seen enough.

You specify which of the five applications PowerAlias launches by simultaneously holding down a key on the keyboard.

File Readers.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:F:File Readers.sit 0 54K 12/28/92 File Readers - This is an Application, with 'Drag and Drop' features, that reads, using Macintalk, the text of any file dropped onto it and displays the text in LARGE type across the screen. It may be useful. Have your E mail files read to you while you drink coffee. Teach your parrot, or other pets, to speak like a computer. For System 7.0+ File_Reader II reads the text of the target file and shows it in LARGE typeacross the window. This application was written using the standard Units that came with Turbo Pascal. If it crashes, please let me know.
Tweety.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:T:Tweety.sit 0 16K 12/23/92 Tweety - Tweety is a System 7 extension for the Mac. Once loaded, it will randomly play sounds in the background while you use your computer. The standard sounds it comes with are soothing (IMHO :-) bird sounds, though you can change the sounds to be anything you desire (see Tweety documentation for instructions).
System Errors 7.0.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:S:System Errors 7.0.1.sit 7.0.1 0 54K 12/23/92 System Errors 7.0.1 - Comprehensive listing of all System 7.01 positive error codes from 1 to 32767 in DOCMaker format. It saves the time and effort needed to use FTF File Utility by simply checking the modification dates on 2 copies of the My FTF Agenda file in the Preferences folder located in the System Folder and overwriting the older copy with the newer one. When prompted for the source file and target file simply chose the file and where to copy it to by using the file dialog box. It will then copy the file as requested, or overwrite it depending upon the modification date/time.
Square One1.5.1Demo.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:S:Square One1.5.1Demo.sit 1.5 0 146K 12/23/92 Square One1.5.1Demo - Square One is what CE Software's tiles should have been! Square One uses both an application palette and active application palette. Each square on the palette can hold an application (with attached files), a listing of control panels, desk accessories, and QuicKeys, or a user defined work group. All launching is done by double clicking the app icon, or using a popup menu to select specific documents. Very Slick. This is brought to you by jud spencer, author of TouchBase. Highly recommeded!! Requires System 7.xx, at least 2 megs of RAM, and a hard disk.
SFDeskTop1.0b4.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:S:SFDeskTop1.0b4.sit 1.0b4 0 38K 12/23/92 SFDeskTop1.0b4 - SF Desktop Windows is a System 7.0 extension that will allow open windows to be seen when viewing the desktop from any of the standard file dialogs. Not anymore.

RAMPv101.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:R:RAMPv101.sit 1.01 0 16K 12/23/92 RAMPv101 - RAM preserves works hard in the background on _any_ Mac with the Apple RAM Disk Driver (PowerBooks, Quadras, Duos) to protect your valuable data. Remember, RAM disks are 'volatile' and subject to havoc from crashes, runaway programs etc. RAM Preserves gives you a little extra security from these maladies!

Fonts & 7.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:F:Fonts & 7.1.sit 0 5K 12/23/92 Fonts & 7.1 - When I got System 7.1, I thought the days of suitcases and other troubles were over--I was wrong. I had a problem which temporarily stumped Apple's help line. If you use or plan to use System 7.1 with TrueType fonts, this small record of my discoveries may interest you.
FinderBar1.01.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:F:FinderBar1.01.sit 1.01 0 32K 12/23/92 FinderBar1.01 - FinderBar is an Extension that installs a tool bar in the Finder. With FinderBar, several of the Finder's routinely used menu commands are made easier to access. Most of the buttons duplicate the functionality of certain File menu commands, but there are also buttons to open the most frequently used control panels which come with System 7 (at least control panels that I personally find myself using with more fequency than others) as well as the major folders within the System Folder and the System Folder itself.
Finderappmenu1.1.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:F:Finderappmenu1.1.1.sit 1.1.1 0 12K 12/23/92 Finderappmenu1.1.1 - FinderAppMenu is a nifty System 7 only extension that creates a menu in Finder listing all of your applications. You run an application simply by selecting it from the menu! This version (1.1.1) is very stable, and handy too!
Drag’in 1.5.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:Drag’in 1.5.sit 1.5 0 21K 12/23/92 Drag’in 1.5 - Drag'in is a cool control panel that makes drag'in windows a lot more useful. When you drag a window, instead of the outline of the window, you'll drag the window. Drag'in also has a really cool option called "Multitask while drag'in". If this option is turned on, via the options dialog in the control panel, you'll be able to move around windows and still continue processing while you are doing it. To see an example of this, duplicate a big folder, and move around the progress dialog. You'll notice that the duplication is still happening, even though you are moving the window. Way cool!
Color Floppy Maker.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:C:Color Floppy Maker.sit 0 5K 12/23/92 Color Floppy Maker - Drag a floppy disk onto this auto-typer, eject the disk, re-insert it... voila!... Color! Requires System 7 or higher. Auto-Typer created with MakeAutoTyper 3.2.
CampFire.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Frontier:CampFire.sit 0 8K 12/23/92 CampFire - Here's a client-server app that provides a group of users a simple way to keep in touch what each of the group members is doing. One machine acts as the "Campfire Server" and each machine on the net is a "Campfire Client." The interesting thing about CampFire is that it's implemented entirely in Frontier scripts, using networked Apple Events. Campfire works with either Frontier or Frontier Runtime as the server or client. Runtime is available as a shareware package. Full source code for the scripts is included, so it can easily be customized or extended using Frontier.
Alias Repair 1.0.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:A:Alias Repair 1.0.sit 1.0 0 11K 12/23/92 Alias Repair 1.0 - This freeware System 7 only extension adds two buttons to the 'broken alias' dialog: Repair and Delete. Repair lets you re-link aliases to their lost application or file. No special keys to invoke, no utility to run--transparent until needed! If you're like me, constantly reorganizing your hard drive, only to find your aliases broken, then this one's for you too!

This document is geared towards Norton Utilities, but the technique can be readily adopted for your own needs.
PowerBook VT102 Fix.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Powerbook:PowerBook VT102 Fix.sit 0 3K 11/13/92 PowerBook VT102 Fix - This replaces a previously uploaded version which contained a bug causing the "s" key to be remapped to an "e" (!). Here's the fix. My appologies to those who downloaded the faulty version.
The Frog Prints.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:T:The Frog Prints.sit 0 23K 11/06/92 The Frog Prints - The Frog Prints is SYSTEM 7 ONLY. Its only interface is Drag anDrop, so you cannot use it with earlier Systems. If you double-click on it from a System 6 machine, you will get an error message and the software will quit gracefully. To use The Frog Prints _with_ System 7, simply select the files you want to print and drag them on the program's icon or an alias of it. The Frog Prints prints plain text files to the printer you have selected in the Chooser.
Pairing Knife.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:P-Q:Pairing Knife.sit 0 16K 11/06/92 Pairing Knife - Pairing Knife does an unbiased kerning pair frequency analysis of files of type TEXT. Unbiased means that all printing characters (from ASCII 32 to 255) are considered in the analysis. Kerning Pairs, of course, are pairs of characters that can appear in text and that can have kerning applied between them. Frequency Analysis means that every pair combination is counted each time it appears. Only works in drag and drop format under System 7.0.
ElfNiks.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:E:ElfNiks.sit 0 12K 11/06/92 ElfNiks - ElfNiks is SYSTEM 7 ONLY. Its only interface is Drag and Drop, so you cannot use it with earlier Systems. If you double-click on it from a System 6 machine, you will get an error message and the software will quit gracefully. ElfNiks does two dumb jobs, actually. It filters files originating on Unix systems and converts the Linefeeds to Carriage Returns. And it filters DOS files, throwing the Linefeeds away. To use ElfNiks _with_ System 7, simply select the files you want to filter and drag them on the program's icon or an alias of it.
SmartFolder1.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:S:SmartFolder1.1.sit 1.1 0 10K 10/27/92 SmartFolder1.1 - SmartFolder is an freeware extension for System 7 that draws a number on top of the folder icons in the Finder that represents the number of files/folders within that folder. It draws over any existing folder icon. If a folder has custom icon it will NOT draw a number on it (NEW in version 1.1). It sometimes is useful to know at a glance if a folder contains anything and this will do exactly that.
No More Mess.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:N-O:No More Mess.sit 0 8K 10/27/92 No More Mess - No More Mess! is an INIT that gives you the option of canceling out of a "Clean up" operation in the Finder. This is especially handy if you really meant to empty the trash and didn't want your folder or desktop all messed up.
Get More Info151.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:G:Get More Info151.sit 1.5.1 0 36K 10/27/92 Get More Info151 - Get More Info is an extention that provides a very quick and easy way to change the type, creator and/or Finder flags for files directly from the Finder. I found that the drag/drop apps out there that change type/creators were too slow for me and I wanted something faster. You invoke Get More Info by selecting the desired file(s) in the Finder and then holding down the option key while choosing 'Get Info' from the File menu in the Finder (or press cms-option-i after you select the file(s) ). A modal dialog will open allowing you to change the type, creator and any of the Finder flags for the file(s) selected.
Airport QuickStart.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Powerbook:Airport QuickStart.sit 1.02 0 9K 10/27/92 Airport QuickStart - Airport Quickstart is an extension which allows faster starting of a powerbook at those airport security gates when the agents wants to be sure you're carrying a computer, and not a bomb. Enclosed is edition 1.0.2 of Airport QuickStart. It now loads a lot sooner (maybe a few seconds so) and no longer exhibits the incompatibility with Now Startup. It is no longer a cdev but is an extension instead, which is fine because the cdev never worked anyway (there's nothing to configure in this extension...you simply hold down the 'Q' key at startup to make it work).
ToggleAT.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Powerbook:ToggleAT.sit 1 9K 10/26/92 ToggleAT - is an FKEY for the Macintosh PowerBook. The intent of this FKEY isto be able to avoid going to the Chooser to turn off AppleTalk every time you take your PowerBook on the road since this requires a menu item, a button click, an “Are you sure” dialog, an OK dialog and a close box. Turning it back on requires a menu item, a button click, an OK dialog and a close box. This is almost more trouble than it is worth. So, I wanted an FKEY that allowed me to blast AppleTalk off with a single key combo and hit the road. This is the ToggleAT FKEY. It comes as resource ID 12, which is only useful if you use a macro program like QuicKeys to trigger it. If you want to use it without such, you will need to renumber it.
VMTuner.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:U-Z:VMTuner.sit 0 83K 10/14/92 VMTuner - System 7 offers you the ability to 'extend' the available memory by pretending your Macintosh has more RAM than it actually has installed. Instead, the Mac uses a file on disk to store portions of the RAM it currently doesn't need in order to make room for another portion it needs to use now. This way of extending memory is called virtual memory (VM), and it happens transparently for the applications, except for one thing: speed. The so-called swapping of portions of RAM from and to the disk causes your computer to slow down considerably. The larger you set the virtual memory size, the slower your Mac will get.
Startup Font Manager 1.1.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:S:Startup Font Manager 1.1.1.sit 1.1.1 0 20K 10/14/92 Startup Font Manager is a System 7.1-ONLY extension designed to give people the ability to enable/disable fonts at startup. It accomplishes this by moving fonts to/from the Fonts folder (inside the System Folder) from/to a (newly created) "Disabled Fonts" folder inside the "Fonts" folder. Doing this effectively hides fonts from the System, which doesn't install them at startup. Fonts which are hidden from the System this way are not "installed"; that is, they do not show up in Font menus and such.
edison10.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Powerbook:edison10.sit 1.0 0 53K 10/14/92 Edison10 - In a small window this program shows Digital battery level, CPU speed, whether the AC adapter is plugged in, charging state and 2 separate timers indicating elapsed time since last charge and running time since last charge. It is suggested that you place it in your startup folder and use it to track battery usage times. Freeware application.
DeBNDL 1.0.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:DeBNDL 1.0.sit 1.0 0 65K 10/14/92 DeBNDL 1.0 - DeBNDL is a drop-type application for use with Apple's System 7.0 or better. It provides a simple method for replacing an icon in the Finder's Desktop File. Normally, you would have to rebuild the Desktop File by holding down command-option when rebooting and then waiting for the Finder to rebuild the entire Desktop File. While this is still recommended when adding, changing or removing substantial numbers of application and other files from your hard drive, when designing that one icon for your special folder or new application DeBNDL is the ticket.
Another Finder Hack 1.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:A:Another Finder Hack 1.1.sit 1.1 0 4K 10/14/92 Finder Hack 1.1 - If you run System 7 on your Mac and use multiple hard drives or multiple hard drive partitions, you’ve probably run across an alert when you try to unmount one of those icons saying, "Are you sure that you sure you want to remove the disk "---" from the desktop? It will reappear on the desktop when the Macintosh is restarted." If you’re annoyed by this alert, you can turn it off by using ResEdit. Details inside!
OVERLAYTEXT.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:N-O:OVERLAYTEXT.sit 0 21K 10/09/92 OVERLAYTEXT - Drag and drop any TEXT file on top of this program's icon to create a free-standing text reading application. Handy for exporting documents to someone who may not have TeachText, Microsoft Word or Edit. The size of the text in the created application is limited to 32000 characters. Even though this program is System 7 dependent, the applications created should run on System 4.1 or higher. Give it a try! Freeware.

Since keeping up-to-date with the current revisions of your Macintosh software is important, using Version is an easy way to produce a listing of your current versions. Use Version to produce a listing of your current revisions of software to determine compatibility and/or the need to upgrade.
Run Dry.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Powerbook:Run Dry.sit 0 3K 9/24/92 Run Dry - Run Dry is a utility By Pete Johnson that allows you to completely discharge your battery. Launching Run Dry will cause it to continue to access the hard dry until the PowerBook Battery is depleated. After the PowerBook battery has been discharged you may recharge it again for a longer life.
KILLFDR1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:J-K:KILLFDR1.sit 0 4K 9/24/92 KILLFDR1 - Kill Finder is a tiny application that will force the Finder to quit when it is launched. If there are no other applications running, the Finder will simply restart again, so be sure another process is in the background. Quitting the Finder will give you about 300K of memory, but you will lose the configurable part of the apple menu, so be sure you have launched all the apps that you will need. I wrote Kill Finder because I needed a quick and easy way to make the Finder quit. Some programs will make use of the free memory through temporary memory options and such. Kill Finder requires System 7.0 or higher, supports Apple Events, and is 32 bit compatible. Enjoy!
IconBOSS.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:H-I:IconBOSS.sit 0 52K 9/24/92 IconBOSS - IconBOSS is a general purpose icon editor for the Macintosh and, more specifically, a Macintosh running under System 7. With this application you may view and edit the icon of any file on your system (as of this version, viewing or editing folder and volume icons is not supported, although that might change with a future release). If you elect to make changes to the icon, you have the option to save the new icon in a separate file (perhaps for use at a later date) or you may update the icon for the file itself, similar to the way you can paste custom icons in System 7's Get Info dialog for files.
OVERLAY SOUNDS 1.01.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:N-O:OVERLAY SOUNDS 1.01.sit 1.01 0 11K 9/19/92 OVERLAY SOUNDS 1.01 - Drag and drop any resource file on Overlay Sounds to find a list of all snd resources found. You can create double-clickable sound files from any of the sounds found. System 7 dependent.
DEFAULTEM.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:DEFAULTEM.sit 0 14K 9/19/92 DEFAULTEM - In the System 7 Finder, if you double click on a TEXT or PICT file with an unknown creator, you will get a prompt asking if you would like to open it using TeachText. This utility will expand the number of defaults whereby you can change TEXT files to Edit or Microsoft Word and PICT files to MacDrawII or SuperPaint. Also you can defaul MacWrite docs to Microsoft Word...FKEYs to ResEdit or Defaultem (Defaultem will run any FKEY file dragged and dropped on it) and MacPaint and StartupScreens to either SuperPaint or GIFConverter.System 7 Dependent.
ARRIBA.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:A:ARRIBA.sit 0 41K 9/19/92 Arriba! enhances the Find File functions of the Finder. Search quickly for files based on name, Type, creator, attributes (invisible, busy, namelock, etc.). Has features to organize your System Folder, make sound files from all snd resources found in files, Make aliases of all appli- cation files found in search, view Paint and PICT files, sample DA and FKEY files .. and more. You will find it much easier and faster than the Finder in location files. Hope you like it! Freeware. System 7 Dependent.
FinderEdit.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:F:FinderEdit.sit 0 27K 9/19/92 FinderEdit - FinderEdit is one of the most useful system 7 utility applications I've ever come across. The author is Dan Weisman whom I've tried to get-a-hold through his internet address and failed. I took the liberty to modify it slightly to create an Icl8. The docs. give information on where to send the shareware contribution. FinderEdit allows the user to modify file mappings, change the font string, change alias styles, change information under the "get info" box, and add "Quit" commands to the finder. Obviously when it's in use it shuts off the finder so I don't recommend running any other applications in the background while FinderEdit is active.
Customize your Finder 7!.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:C:Customize your Finder 7!.sit 0 6K 9/19/92 Customize your Finder 7! - Well, you know when you use the Finder's Find command, and a window comes up telling you it's searching? ClickLock 1.0a4.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Powerbook:ClickLock 1.0a4.sit 1.0a4 0 9K 9/19/92 ClickLock 1.0a4 - ClickLock is for all of you PowerBook users who are having trouble holding the button down while rolling your trackball. Since most of us fall into one of these two categories, ClickLock is for you. This simple INIT (system extension) allows you to "lock" the trackball's button down. To do so, hold down the "cntl" key (the "control" key on desktop keyboards) while clicking the trackball (or mouse) button. Now even after you release the trackball button, the Macintosh will still think that the button is down. Not until you click a second time will the Mac "unlock", or release, the button.

When you select "Empty Trash" (actually it will say "Trash Selector" when Trash Selector is active) from the Special menu, you will be presented with a hierarchical list of all items in the trash can. Select the ones you want to trash and then trash 'em. Couldn't be easier.

E-Meters.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:E:E-Meters.sit 0 24K 9/04/92 E-Meters - These apps increment a counter every time they are allowed to go through their event loop, if they are in the background then they must rely on the active application to pass spare time onto other applications running under Multifinder or system 7+. PowerBook owners will see what happens when the CPU drops into rest mode, the display will catch up with this as soon as you move the trackball or hit a key. Both of these apps use the GetNextEvent thingy in the event loop and should get the maximum number of nullevents etc.
BalloonFONT.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:B:BalloonFONT.sit 0 6K 9/04/92 BalloonFONT - This is a Control Panel Device that allows you to change the Font used with balloon help.

Earth 1.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:E:Earth 1.1.sit 1.1 0 7K 8/06/92 Earth 1.1 - Earth is a system extension which draws a spinning globe over the apple in the menu bar (in colour if you have it). To install Earth, simply put it into your System Folder and reboot. Once it is installed, placing the cursor in the upper left-hand corner of the screen and waiting a fraction of a second will put the spinning globe away (or bring it back). Earth 1.1 may be freely used and copied as long as it is not sold for profit without my permission and any redistribution includes this file. (Enjoy!) If you would like to customize it for yourself, please see the section "For ResEdit Hackers".
Zing.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:U-Z:Zing.sit 1 23K 7/28/92 Zing - Zing is a small “chat” application that uses system 7 AppleEvents for its communication. Ping doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, but it runs in only 30K of memory; small enough to make it possible to run as startup item for most macs. The problem with most larger talk applications is that they’re too large to run, so noone bothers, so you can’t talk after all.

small fortue cookie.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Frontier:small fortue cookie.sit 0 16K 7/28/92 small fortue cookie - This verb uses an associated table of "fortunes", which will automatically be installed if the installation script for this verb is allowed to run normally. This verb also depends on the randomness of the random number generator - you will probably want to install the Randomize verb, that overcomes a bug in Frontier™ 1.0 related to the random number generator. The fortunes comes in two sizes (at present) - big and small; the big one requires more memory, and you may have to increase the memory size for the Frontier application in some environments.
SleepAlert.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Powerbook:SleepAlert.sit 0 3K 7/28/92 SleepAlert - SleepAlert suppresses the warning dialog that appears if you try to put a PowerBook to sleep while AppleTalk is turned on. It basically simulates clicking the Sleep button. It turns out that there are 3 different dialogs (in increasing order of severity) that might appear, depending on the situation, (1) AppleTalk is turned on, (2) You have a file server mounted, (3) Some program is actively using AppleTalk.
Site-to-Site 1.0.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:S:Site-to-Site 1.0.sit 1.0 0 24K 7/28/92 Site-to-Site 1.0 - Site-to-Site, a drag-and-drop utility (Drop Rob-Box), moves all selected items (disks, folders, files) into a newly created or existing directory. scratchpad.cdemo1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Frontier:scratchpad.cdemo1.sit 0 8K 7/28/92 scratchpad.cdemo1 - This script produces a list of all the script objects in an app table. It prompts you for the name of the application and then creates an outline of all the scripts in its "app table". Written by Dave Winer for Baiss Magnusson of AutoDesk, to help list his 200+ Frontier verbs! It's a good example of how to use the table.visit verb, which seems to be kind of confusing. Maybe this script will clear up the confusion?
Scheduler Suite.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Frontier:Scheduler Suite.sit 0 7K 7/28/92 Scheduler Suite - Is there a script you want to run at the same time every day? Or every hour on the hour? That's what the Scheduler Suite is for -- it turns Frontier into a real-time operating system for scripts. There are two menu items that add a new task to the schedule. Add an Hourly Task… adds a task that runs every hour-on-the-hour. The command prompts you for a single-line script. Click on OK to add the task. If there's a task you want performed every night at 2AM, select the Add an Overnight Task… command.
Savvy.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:S:Savvy.sit 0 6K 7/28/92 Savvy - Extension--drop in system folder and restart. It modifies "Get Info" dialog box to display an application's System 7 savvy and 32-bit cleanliness. Invaluable for testing applications--don't find out the hard way. Due to popular demand, we have been able to glean a bit more information regarding the codes provided by this init. Savvy apparently reads the SIZE resource and reports the settings contained in that resource.

random fortune cookie.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Frontier:random fortune cookie.sit 0 4K 7/28/92 random fortune cookie - This verb overcomes a bug in Frontier™ 1.0. The bug is that the pseudo-random number generator uses the same sequence everytime Frontier is launched - this may be useful in some circumstances, but was not for me. When the Randomize verb is installed in Frontier, a code resource (of type RAND) is added to the Frontier.root file - the code contained in this resource "seeds" the psuedo-random number generator sequence with the current time of day. A call to Randomize in your customStartup script is suggested.

ARA Server.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Frontier:ARA Server.sit 0 15K 7/28/92 ARA Server - One of the most exciting new capabilities to come along in quite some time is Apple Computer's AppleTalk Remote Access, or ARA. It allows you to create a connection between a remote computer and a local area network. We like ARA at UserLand, in fact we use it to bridge computers here all the time. It works. Then we heard that Apple was offering an API for ARA -- we couldn't resist creating a small "applet" to bridge ARA to Frontier script writing. As a result, your scripts can now operate over a phone line! This is going to be very interesting. Using ARA Server and Frontier, you can automatically initiate an ARA connection, manage it, and terminate the connection.

The problem is not destructive. Your machine will not crash and data will not be corrupted. Installing the 950 Color Addition corrects the problem.

PBTools 1.2.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Powerbook:PBTools 1.2.sit 1.2 0 9K 4/25/92 PBTools 1.2 - SafeSleep is a small System Extension (aka INIT) for the PowerBooks. Though I haven't tested it on a Mac Portable, I suspect it will work fine on that too. SafeSleep will not load on any Mac which does not have the Power Manager. SafeSleep blanks the screen and requests a password whenever a sleeping Mac is awakened. SpinD is a small FKey that spins down the internal hard drive in Macs that support that function. In Macs that don't support drive spin down, the FKey just beeps and exits. By Bill Steinberg - Sat, Mar 21, 1992. AppleLink X0542

I'm releasing it now to get feedback. One future enhancement will be a routine that will place a time-to-download estimate into the SitC resource (The TF Comment resource).
MountAlias 1.0.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:M:MountAlias 1.0.sit 1.0 2 13K 4/14/92 MountAlias 1.0 - MountAlias is a control panel that creates aliases automatically to AppleShare volumes every time an AppleShare volume is mounted. These aliases are put in a folder (or in subfolders of this folder) that you specify. By default, this path is "HardDisk:Aliases:", you should use the “Change Folder” button in the control panel to modify this (or rename your hard disk if you're boring). MountAlias will create alias files in one of three ways, specified by the three “Alias Name” radio buttons.
TrashAlias 1.1.1.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:T:TrashAlias 1.1.1.sit 1.1.1 1 15K 4/09/92 TrashAlias 1.1.1 - is a freeware Control Panel for System 7. In System 7, users can create multiple desktop icons to represent a single document, application, or folder. One represents the actual original, but the others, called aliases, just point to it. This feature, for example, allows a user to keep an application located within one folder, but be able launch it by double-clicking on its alias from another location, such as the desktop. The alias is actually a separate file created and maintained by the Finder. However, if a user deletes the original file, the alias file still remains. TrashAlias remedies this problem by automatically deleting any alias files associated with a file (or folder) when it is deleted.

Finally, when using System 6, it allows the maximum number of open files to be changed. To install it under System 6.0x, drag the FCB Inspector file icon into your System Folder and reboot. To install it under System Software 7.0, drag the FCB Inspector file icon over the System Folder icon and click OK to the dialog or drag it directly into the Control Panels folder and reboot. FCB Inspector provides balloon help in system 7.
Understudy.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:U-Z:Understudy.sit 1 6K 3/22/92 Understudy - The System 7 Finder (by default) will offer to open a TEXT or PICT document with TeachText, if the application that originally created the document is unavailable. Some folders are exceptions to this. Personally, I’m rather picky about the layout of files and folders on the volumes I manage at work. I am constantly finding folders such as “Empty Folder”, “Copy of Empty Folder”, “Copy of Copy of Empty Folder”, etc. — all with no files. One would think that “users” would have better things to do with their time. This is why I wrote QTrash™. That and I’ve finally managed to find sufficient time to learn C on the Macintosh (I’m learning C and Macintosh programming at the same time, so it’s slow going).

For example: After Dark Modules will be placed into the After Dark Files folder inside the Control Panels folder, printer fonts will be placed in your Extensions folder, StuffIt files into an Archives folder, etc. For files of a particular type, if there is only one folder for those files, then this script will be useful. Suites.CD.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Frontier:Suites.CD.sit 0 17K 3/22/92 Every month I get a CD full of technotes, sample code, and other goodies froApple Computer. My mouth starts to water, thinking of all the new free source code I'm getting. I start opening folders to browse around and see what's on the disk. But the CD is too slow! It takes all the fun out of it. So -- I wrote a script that builds a table of contents of the CD in a Frontier outline. Stack suite.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:Frontier:Stack suite.sit 0 8K 3/22/92 Stack suite - At UserLand Software, we needed a Frontier-based stack for development we're doing on top of a communications software package. When connected to the host there's a limit of 30 minutes per session. However, the traversal the script does can take longer than 30 minutes. Solution: every time the script dives into a topic, it pushes its address on a stack. Every time thru the loop a sub-script checks to see if the timer expired. If so, it logs off, then logs back on.

From Frontier's Suites menu, select the PowerBook command. Select the "Set Home Path…" command in the Configure sub-menu, and select the folder you created in step 2.

It is primarily intended for use by programmers but can be safely used by anyone--it doesn't modify the files you examine in any way. It's a browser, not an editor. This software is freeware. For more information, select the "More About File Browser..." item in the Balloon help menu in File Browser. By Ed Hall.

If you obtained System 7 through AMUG and took advantage of the package deal which included "The Macintosh Bible Guide to System 7", that also has complete installation instructions. One of the purposes of this article is to provide guidance for those attempting to go it without written guidance. There are one or two little hookers about System 7 you should know before installing it. This System 7 install article was written by Dorman Bullard of the AMUG News team. Put PopOver and aliases of frequently used applications in the folder. Put alias of PopOver in Startup Items folder and voila! With small window on the right it works very much like On Cue. Unlike On Cue this is an application.. no INITs. Look at About... in Apple menu and Show Balloons for help. System 7.0 dependent On Cue clone.
DTPPrinter.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:D:DTPPrinter.sit 1.1 5 17K 9/06/91 When Apple first introduced System 7 at the 1989 Developer's Conference, it included something called the 'New Print Architecture'. One of the really cool parts of the NPA were 'Desktop Printers'. This allowed you to have an icon on your desktop which represented a particular printer. You could then drag a document onto the particular printer icon, and it would print to that printer. Very useful when you have multiple Laserwriters, a Fax Modem, Print to Disk utility, etc. Well, the NPA disappeared, and with it 'Desktop Printers'....In order to correct this MAJOR oversight, I wrote DTPrinter which implements 'Desktop Printers' NOW under System 7.
DropSave.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 Tools:D:DropSave.sit 2 5K 9/06/91 With DropSave installed, when you shift click on the title bar of a document in an application which has a “Save As” menu item, the document will zoom down to a region shaped like a document icon. You can drag this region around and drop it on a Finder window. DropSave will then make the application save the document in that window. By option-shift-clicking on the title bar, the application’s “Save As” dialog will appear so you can change the name of the document if you wish. (You can even move around directories if you really wanted to.) The document will reappear sometime during this process.

Then make aliases of all frequently used applications and place them in the folder with EasyLaunch.you should place an alias of EasyLaunch in the Startup Items folder in order to have it open on start-up.

Sys7 font fix stack.sit System7DL AMUG CD:Files:System7 tools:S:Sys7 font fix stack.sit 0 45K 7/09/91 Sys7 font fix stack - I found a annoying thing with System 7.0 - ancient bitmap fonts from the Mac 128K/512K days can't be double-clicked and examined, copy to the System file, etc. like newer fonts can be. And in the System 7.0 docs, Apple tells us that Font/DA mover is no longer used... This stack tells how I used ResEdit (2.0 or higher) to add the necessary 'FOND' resource and includes graphics. This will allow you to double-click on an ancient bitmap font suitcase. NOTE: the user must be familiar with ResEdit before trying this!!
